If your eczema settles down over the summer and then comes back every year around October, you are not imagining it. Cold, dry months are hard on skin that already struggles to hold its own moisture, and across most of Pakistan this is exactly the stretch of year when the air dries out, the geyser comes on, and the heater starts running in the evenings.
The good news is that most of what makes winter eczema worse is in your daily routine, and small changes there make a real difference.
Why winter makes eczema worse
Eczema is, at its root, a weak skin barrier. Healthy skin keeps water in and irritants out. When that barrier is damaged, water escapes easily and everyday things like soap, rough fabric or dust can set off redness and itching.
Winter pushes on that weak spot from several sides at once. The air holds less moisture, so it pulls more of it out of your skin. Long hot baths feel wonderful on a cold morning but strip away the natural oils your skin is trying to keep. Room heaters dry the air indoors even further. And in Punjab, the smog season arrives at the same time, which is one more irritant sitting on exposed skin all day.
None of this means you are doing anything wrong. It means your skin needs a slightly different routine for these few months.
Small changes that help
Keep bath water warm, not hot. It is the single change most people find hardest and notice most. Hot water feels soothing for a minute and leaves skin tighter and itchier afterwards. Lukewarm water and a shorter bath are much kinder.
Use a gentle soap, and use less of it. Harsh, heavily scented soaps strip the skin. You only need soap where you actually need it, not over every patch of eczema.
Moisturize within a few minutes of washing. Pat your skin mostly dry with a soft towel, leave it slightly damp, and apply your moisturizer or gel straight away. This is when skin takes it in best and holds onto that water longest.
Wear cotton next to your skin. Wool shawls and sweaters are part of every Pakistani winter, but wool against bare skin is a common trigger. A thin cotton layer underneath lets you stay warm without the itch.
Go easy on the heater. Sitting close to a gas or electric heater for hours dries skin quickly. Keep some distance, and if the room feels very dry, a bowl of water near the heater adds a little moisture back to the air.
Rinse off after a smoggy day. On heavy smog days, wash your face and hands gently with lukewarm water when you get home, then moisturize again.
Keep nails short and try not to scratch. Scratching breaks the skin further and starts the itch cycle all over again. If you scratch in your sleep, soft cotton gloves at night really do help.
Where RYP Gel fits in
RYP GEL, our Herbal Skin Gel, is made for exactly this kind of irritated, itchy skin. It is coconut oil with natural ayurvedic herbs, made in small batches without harmful chemicals, and gentle enough for all ages.
The way to use it in winter is the same as any other time, just more consistently. Apply a small amount to clean skin and massage it in, morning and night, ideally right after washing while the skin is still a little damp. Most people see the itch settle and their skin calm within two to three weeks of using it every day. If your skin reacts easily, patch test it on a small area first.
Because it is a gel and absorbs quickly, it works well during an active flare. Once the skin has calmed, some people like to add a heavier moisturizer on top during the driest weeks. We wrote more about that in our post on eczema gel versus cream, which you can find on our blog.
When to see a doctor
A good routine helps most people through winter, but it is not a replacement for medical care. See a doctor or dermatologist if your eczema is spreading quickly, if the skin is cracked, weeping or crusting, if you have a fever with it, or if nothing you try brings any relief after a few weeks. Some cases need treatment that a topical product alone was never meant to provide.
