Dry Scalp or Dandruff? How to Tell in Winter and What Helps

Dry Scalp or Dandruff? How to Tell in Winter and What Helps

White flakes on a dark shawl get called dandruff almost every time, but in winter they may be plain dry scalp. The two look alike and need different care, and the difference matters most when you reach for the oil bottle.

What each one actually is

Dry scalp is what it sounds like: the skin is short of moisture, so it gets irritated and flakes. Healthline, in a medically reviewed guide, lists cold, dry air as one of the triggers, which is why so many people first notice it around now, when the room heater comes on.

Dandruff is a different problem. The same guide says its main cause is seborrheic dermatitis, a condition that makes skin oily, red and scaly. A yeast called Malassezia is tied to it, and that yeast feeds on the oils on your scalp. So one scalp is too dry, and the other often has plenty of oil and is reacting to it.

How to tell them apart

Start with the flakes. Dry scalp flakes are small and dry, and they fall easily. Dandruff flakes are bigger and look oily.

Then look at the skin. Both can itch, but a dry scalp usually isn't inflamed, while dandruff can come with redness. If your hands, shins and lips are also dry, that points towards dry scalp too. If your hair turns greasy quickly, that points towards dandruff.

There is also a simple test that Healthline describes. Put a light moisturizer on your scalp before bed and wash your hair the next morning. If the flakes have gone, dryness was the likely cause.

None of this is a diagnosis, and you can have both at once. It is enough to choose where to start.

If it looks like dry scalp

Turn the water down. Hot water feels lovely in December and takes moisture from the scalp. Use lukewarm.

Wash a little less often, and gently. Healthline suggests a gentle shampoo followed by a moisturizing conditioner.

Leave the hair dryer for when you need it. Air dry when you can, and pat your hair with a soft cotton towel instead of rubbing it.

Oil your scalp if you like the routine. A dry scalp is where oiling makes the most sense. Warm a little oil, massage it in with your fingertips and wash it out with a mild shampoo.

If it looks like dandruff

Use a proper dandruff shampoo. Healthline says most cases can be treated at home with one from the pharmacy. Oladoc, the Pakistani health platform, suggests a shampoo with zinc pyrithione, two or three times a week, worked into a lather for about a minute before you rinse.

Be careful with oil. This is the hard one, because oiling is what most of us were taught to do for flakes. Oladoc's advice is to rinse oil out after 20 to 30 minutes, because leaving it on for long can feed Malassezia. We found no good study that tests this for each oil, so treat it as sensible caution. If your flakes get worse after an oiling night, take that seriously and stop for a few weeks.

Skip products with alcohol near your scalp. Oladoc lists hairsprays and perfumes with alcohol among the things that make a flaky scalp worse.

Where RYP fits in, and where it doesn't

RYP Herbal Hair Oil is mustard, coconut and castor oil with black seeds, and it is made to nourish the scalp and hair. It is not a dandruff treatment, and we won't tell you it is. If your scalp is dry, it can be part of your winter routine. If you have real dandruff, get that under control first, and if you do oil, wash it out sooner than the two to three hours or overnight we normally suggest.

RYP Herbal Hair Shampoo is herbal and home made with Amla, Aritha and Shikakai, for shinier, stronger hair. It is not a medicated dandruff shampoo either. It also needs a conditioner after it. A few customers have told us their scalp felt dry or itchy when they skipped that step, and winter is a bad time to skip it.

When to see a doctor

Healthline's rule is to see a dermatologist if you have used a dandruff shampoo for at least a month and the flakes haven't improved or are getting worse. Eczema and psoriasis can look similar on the scalp and need different treatment. Go sooner if your scalp is very red, sore or weeping, or if you are losing hair in patches.
